SMART START B&H: Association Ekosol - From dream to reality

Group of students developing their ideas and turn them into reality

From dream to reality

With the initiative from the professor Amir Hadžić in electrical engineering high school in Tuzla, a group of students who were willing to develop their ideas and turn them into reality gathered. Based on great experience of the professor, soon enough one project was written, where students expressed their wish to build a solar charger for mobile phones. It was a painful process of meetings and devising ways to realize this project.

As every beginning, this one was hard as well. Our meetings took place in school classrooms, even in hallways if some good idea came up to our minds. And so, we came to the idea to form citizen association in our town, and to find a space where young prosperous people, like us, could meet and realize their innovations. That idea was called “Makerspace”.

The idea was quite hard to reach, we did not have the financial resources, but the enthusiasm was not decreasing. Every day with some innovations and ideas, the idea of a multifunctional workshop and the “Makerspace” classroom was also mentioned. In the beginning, a great step was made by the professor who wrote a project through which we managed to provide money for establishing our association of citizens “Ekosol”.

We came up with the name of our association very fast, it is the combination of the two words that we are most supportive of through our ideas, ecology and solar energy. Soon, we successfully realized a series of projects we wrote. But not to spend much time on the projects and all the issues we encountered during the funding of the association, let's talk about the biggest project we have written so far. We wrote the project to the CSSP in Sarajevo where we expressed our desires to start our own business and to enable our small workshop. People from the CSSP have recognized our readiness and creativity and have shown us confidence and with 6.000 EUR they gave us a big initiative with our idea. Our dream could become a reality. Now everything was up to us, we needed to find adequate space, to enable it and start working. We went step by step, and as the biggest problem, it was the first step, finding adequate space.

Our goal was to have a small room of up to 40m2, but the days went by in our search and there was no appropriate space. Finally, when we found a 22m2 room, owned by the city of Tuzla, we had to wait a couple of months to get approval for the use of the space, of course, we had to pay the rent. As with everything so far, more problems arrived. We’ve waited for almost a month for electricity and water connection. We did not wait for electricity and water to enter our space with brushes, rollers, ladders and paint. We organized a room painting action. Considering that the building in which our space was was quite old, we had to work on the walls too. Several holes in the walls had been covered and painted. Before electricity and water arrived, we created a 3D model of our office and designed the whole interior of the space. We have slowly begun to procure the necessary tools and materials. But, problems again. Since we were tax-exempted through the project, this has caused us many difficulties. All companies are afraid to sell their products without VAT (PDV), so some of them rejected us. We have managed to get the most of the materials from the company Dženex, which helped us a lot. Finally, power arrived. We took hammers, drills, staplers, etc. in our hands. The whole furniture making process lasted for 15 days, and that was because of our obligations at the university. Although we are students of electrical engineering and the University of technology, I have to admit that we are very good at carpentry. We’ve build a couple of shelves and three folding tables. After the construction, we grinded and varnished the furniture. There was a claustrophobic situation in the office, many of the shelves which were supposed to be on the walls were on the floor, and the tables were not positioned. We’ve been setting up everything all day long.

When everything was as we planned in our 3D model, we were very proud of ourselves. Young people, students, all by themselves without any professional help, have built a workshop. Because of cutting wood, grinding, drilling the workshop was pretty dirty. With the help of the female members of the association, we’ve washed the workshop and windows. Our hard work was recognized from the microcredit organization “Partner” so they donated us several quality chairs as well as one computer. The colder weather was approaching, and we noticed that our workshop has no possibility of warming up so we got a little bit worried. We came up to the idea that the most cost-effective way to warm up the space is by the inverter air conditioner. We'll see if we can provide that for ourselves. There are still a few steps left to our ultimate goal. We are very excited. We hope everything will be done very fast and that everyone will be happy with our work and services.

Nekoliko rupa u zidovima smo prekrili i sve okrečili. Dok struja i voda ne dođu napravili smo i 3d model našeg prostora i osmislili cijeli dizajn uređenja. Polako smo krenuli u nabavku potrebnog alata i materijala. Ponovo problemi.
