SMART START B&H: Makerspace a multifunctional classroom and workshop

First presentation: Theoretical and practical basis for manufacturing of an identification system for monitoring student presence at schools.

First presentation: Theoretical and practical basis for manufacturing of an identification system for monitoring student presence at schools.

The presentation was held in the school in the laboratory for pneumatics and hydraulics as a part of the „SmartStart, the sustainable influence of civil society  through entrepreneurship and innovation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia and Turkey“ This project is being implemented by Citizen association EKOSOL and Centre for Civil Society Promotion CCSP from Sarajevo with the help of the (IPA II) funding of the European Union in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The presentation, by the name  „Theoretical and practical basis for manufacturing of an identification system for monitoring student presence at schools“ was intended by eleven students from the public  high school for Mechanical Engineering, public high school for  Electrical Engineering, public gymnasium „Mesa Selimovic“, gymnasium Catholic School Center „St. Franjo“ and the public elementary school Tusanj.

Project leader professor Salih Saracevic used the intro to  showcase some video clips of ID scanners that are already being used in other parts of the globe, and he especially addressed the useage of this technology in schools.  During the presentation the participants  had an interactive approach throughout the activity. Professor Salihs focus was directed to questioning the students for their opinion about the implementation of such a technology in their schools, there were divided opinions among the students, some where OK with the idea while others questioned if this is going to invade their privacy more than it is going to improve their academic performance and safety. The elementary school students didn't seem to have any objections towards the idea that their teacher and parents could know if there were in the school at a given time or not, or any aspect of  this aproach, while high school students were a little more sceptical, at the end even the older students realised that this technology was more benificial to them and that this technology schould be the next step in our school system!

During the practical part of this presentation the participants were taught how to enter student and teachers names into the database. After the demonstration by professor Slih, elementary student Emina Mandzukic, student at the Elementary School Tusanj showd what she has learned by entering data into the databese and then testing the systems response for identification of the right ID from the database. Every student that was present had the chance to try out the scanner and see it performing its task, familiarizing with the technology. All of the material and components were supplied by professor Salih. At the end the students were motivated to suggest this system to the management to their schools. An agreement has also been made so that every school that is interested to  implement this technology, can do so with the help and guidence of the prodject initiators.

Todays project is part of the regular activities of the annual schooling plan of the Public High School of Electrical Engineering in Tuzla, as well as a final showcase of the practical works of the students and the round  table  that will be held at he end of all project activities in December. Citizen association EKOSOL and the public high school for Electrical Engineering in Tuzla have signed an agreement for the implementation of the above mentioned activities.

Makerspace multifunkcionalna - učionica i radionica
